1. Definition and Indicators of Child Abuse

Pickle Power Kids defines child abuse as any act or omission by a person that endangers or alters a child’s physical or emotional health and development. Abuse manifests in various environments, including physical spaces and online platforms, and includes:

  • Physical: Non-accidental force resulting in injury.

  • Sexual: Non-consensual sexual behavior, communication, or exposure.

  • Emotional: Psychological manipulation, degradation, or control.

  • Neglect: Failure to provide essential care, supervision, or protection.

  • Abuse of Power: Exploitation of authority by staff, coaches, or volunteers.

  • Grooming: Trust-building behaviors designed to facilitate future abuse.

  • Domestic Exposure: Witnessing domestic or family violence.

2. Protocol for Managing a Disclosure

When a child discloses an allegation of abuse, personnel must adhere to the following protocol:

  • Support: Maintain a calm demeanor, validate the child's courage in speaking out, and reassure them of their safety.

  • Documentation: Create a factual, written record of the disclosure immediately following the interaction.

  • Prohibitions: Do not guarantee confidentiality, do not interrogate or prompt the child for specific details, and do not confront the accused party.

Upon receipt of a report, the organisation will initiate risk management procedures to isolate the child from potential harm. The matter will be reviewed via internal compliance investigations and, where required by law, escalated to law enforcement and child protection agencies.
